We were both unable to individually scrape together enough money for a deposit on a place, so we decided to combine our funds and get a joint mortgage. We got the best place we could, but it was still pretty run down. Thankfully, Sandra's friend is a contractor and he would come by at weekends and teach us how to do DIY to repair the place.
